Overview
A gate takes more abuse than any other part of a fence. It swings thousands of times, hangs its full weight on two hinges and, if it is automatic, depends on a motor, sensors and controls working together. When something gives, the gate drags, will not latch, stops halfway or will not open at all.
We start by finding the cause. On manual gates it is usually a worn hinge, a frame that has racked out of square or a hinge post that has shifted in the clay. On automatic gates it can also be the operator, limit settings, photo-eye sensors, the battery, the power supply or the remotes and keypad. Tell us what the gate is doing and, if you can see it, the operator brand.
Sometimes the straight answer is that a gate or operator has reached the end of its life. When repair is not the better value, you get a quote for the replacement option too.

Options
A photo or short video of the gate moving, or not moving
The operator brand and model, if visible
When the problem started and what changed
Whether the gate swings or slides, and its rough size
Any recent storm, impact or power outage
How the gate is powered: hard-wired, battery or solar
Local know-how
Summer heat drains batteries and works motors hard, spring storms bring outages and surges, and clay soil shifts hinge posts.
A yearly check of hinges, rollers, sensors and limits catches most problems before the gate fails.

Fence FAQs
What Fort Worth property owners ask about gate repair.
More fence questionsThe most common cause is a photo-eye sensor that is blocked, misaligned or dirty, which tells the gate something is in its path. Limit settings, a weak battery and obstructions are other frequent culprits. If cleaning and checking the sensors does not help, call for a diagnosis.
Often. The operator, controls, sensors and power are diagnosed before any parts or replacement are recommended. Share the brand and model if you can see it on the operator.
Usually a worn hinge, a frame that has racked out of square or a hinge post that has leaned. Fixing the post or bracing the frame often solves it for good.
It depends on what failed. Hinge and latch repairs cost far less than replacing an operator or rebuilding a gate. Diagnosing first keeps the repair focused on what actually failed.
Use the manual release described in your operator’s manual to open the gate by hand, and keep the gate path clear when power returns. If you are not sure how, call before forcing the gate.
